Rest easy, MMA fans. It appears UFC president Dana White and featherweight champion Conor McGregor (pictured) are well on their way back to being BFFs.
Despite last month’s public standoff over required promotional duties, which resulted in White pulling McGregor from UFC 200’s main event against Nate Diaz, White told the “The Dan Patrick Show” Wednesday that he is once again on speaking terms with his cash cow.
“Conor and I have been talking every day,” White said. “We’re gonna have dinner next week. Our relationship is great. We’re gonna put the little speed bump in the road behind us and move forward. Everything is great.”
This wasn’t the first time White had a public spat with one of his fighters, and like in all of the other instances, he was able to put the beef aside for business. However, like in those other cases, White is sure to forgive but never forget.
Yanking McGregor from UFC 200 still has to sting White. ESPN.com previously reported that not having McGregor in the historic event was costing the UFC roughly $45 million.
White said he wasn’t sure when he would put his golden boy back to work, but UFC 202 in August could be the most likely landing spot since UFC 201 on July 30 is already headlined by the welterweight title tilt between champion Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley.
McGregor is fixated on an immediate welterweight rematch with Diaz, who upset McGregor in May despite accepting the bout on just 11 days’ notice. Although, White has said he wants McGregor to fight the winner of UFC 200’s interim featherweight bout with Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar in his next outing.
Regardless, White claims McGregor is ready to go right now if needed – just as long as he doesn’t have to “hand out fliers.”
“McGregor is ready to fight on 200,” White added. “The thing that has made Conor McGregor a massive star and why people love him is this kid loves to fight. He’ll fight anybody, anywhere, any time. He goes in and goes for broke. His fights are exciting and fun, leading up to them, during them and after them. McGregor is ready to fight.”
